Dancing Spheres Prototype

Coldplay commissioned Harvey and John to take Floating Orchestra into further development. The band wanted a large scale version of the piece for a vast live performance. The piece evolved into vibrantly colourful spheres, dancing along to the music. On such a large scale the intended impact was playful and energetic to echo the energy of the band.

Dancing Spheres is one in a series of installations developed by Harvey & John that exploit the Bernoulli Principle, which states that spheres will float on columns of high flow, low-pressure air.

We experimented with several ways to scale up the installation from 6cm spheres floating 30cm high to 20cm spheres floating 100cm high. Our initial experiments revolved around using compressed air channelled through a matrix of tubes and controlled via analogue valves. We eventually managed to source electric powered high flow fans that allowed us to develop software to vary the airspeeds in response to the music.
